So much is said about organic viticulture and consumption of organic wine, but why is it so important?
Is it just a trend of the moment or does it bring real benefits?
To some, it might seem a trivial question, but we realize that there is still so much confusion and misinformation.
First of all, it is good to know what is meant by organic wine, since it is sometimes confused with the term natural wine.
Unlike other types, for organic wine there is a disciplinary (Implementing Regulation (EU) No. 203/2012 of the European Commission) that regulates the certification in terms of sustainability and quality of wine. Natural wine, on the other hand, is not regulated by any legislation. By definition organic wine is a type of wine produced through viticulture techniques that do not use fertilisers, herbicides, insecticides and genetically modified organisms (GMOs)/chemicals.
It promotes a responsible use of energy and natural resources. It therefore tends to have a reduced impact on the environment.
In Italy, the region that holds the record for organic wine production is Sicily, especially the province of Trapani. This record is also due to the climatic and geological conditions that characterize the island: the excellent ventilation of the vineyards in the hills or mountains, the beneficial effect of breezes and salt on the vineyards near the sea, the important solar radiation and the absence of violent atmospheric phenomena, such as spring hail.
So what are the advantages of drinking organic wine?
1. is good for the heart (if consumed responsibly): being rich in natural antioxidants helps prevent inflammatory and cardiovascular diseases;
2. promotes the digestive process;
3. is healthier.
Moreover, organic viticulture brings with it a particular attention to the environment on the part of the producer and guarantees the uniqueness of the wine: each bottle will be, although in part, different from the other.
We also have embarked on the path of organic viticulture since 2011: as a symbol of commitment to the protection of the natural resources offered by our island and as an act of love and attention to the environment and future generations. In addition, since 2015 we have obtained the certification of organic production for greater transparency towards the customer and winelover.
So, do you still have doubts about the choice of organic wine?
